Essential to Know about 4G Boxes and Special Packaging

4G boxes are not ordinary packing boxes, but are meant for specialized category of packaging compliant with the regulations of transporting dangerous goods specified as per United Nations Recommendations.

Those who are hearing about these category of boxes like ‘UN 4G’ may get confused at the first point. The primary thing to know about it is that it is not just a simple box, but a vital part of packaging in which the standard fiberboard box is only one component.

UN 4G marking

The UN 4G marking displayed on the outer packaging of the fiberboard implies a legal bounding on the part of the person who applies the markings. This marking further signifies that the completed packaging meets all applicable regulations of ‘UN 4G’ standard.

So, without having a complete understanding of the actual configuration of the packaging, no one, including the box manufacturer will not be in a position to stick the UN4G markings. Doing so will be a violation of the International Code for Air Transport (ICAO), which is punishable.

Technical specifications

One thing important to note is that the 4G boxes themselves will not offer protection to the contents and those who are handling it. These are considered as an integral component in combined UN4G packaging of dangerous goods as they can provide the most needed protection to the devices stored within the boxes.

These packaging may include items as plastic jugs, bottles, foam-lined packs, or metal canisters etc. The special marking on the UN4G boxes signifies that the combination of the packaging used and the boxes are tested and carefully prepared for safe transporting.

Even if assuring optimum compliance with the standards, failing to apply the signified marking onto the packaging before transportation is again a violation of ICAO Technical Instructions.

Potential troubles if the technical instructions are not met

As discussed above, it is mandatory to meet the ICAO technical standards while shipping hazardous materials. Only proper packaging supplies should be used and all standard packaging instructions must be followed.

In case if the packaging does not meet the said instructions, there are many inconveniences one may have to face during the time of shipping including;

  • Heavy delays in shipment of goods. In other words, the shipping companies and courier services may reject your parcel by considering as unsafe if the packing does not meet international standards. This is applicable to the type of boxes used, method of packing, and also properly marking the boxes with UN 4G standard.
  • If it is not done properly, you may have to face a lot of unnecessary expenses too on packaging costs. If you make a compromise at the first time in terms of getting proper packing material, you may have to repurchase it once if it is rejected for shipping. This is an unwanted wastage of time and money.

More importantly, the legal liability of the safety aspects and if any threat or damage during the time of shipping or to the delivery personnel will be fully bound on the sender who is liable for the packaging.
